Shown above are (1) Typical LED high Bay with UGR of greater than 28 and (2) VHB3-L2 from Vision Engineering with UGR of 19.5 High Bay luminaires will need to achieve a Corrected Unified Glare Rating (UGR) of less than 28 to be classified DLC Premium per the new DLC Version 5.1 Technical Requirements February 2020. More to come on this topic, but glare is out in the LED world and comfort is in! Not Seeing really is believing!

The upgrade program has seen federal funding allocated to the construction of the highway, which will involve (90) ninety relocatable lighting systems deployed along 4.4km of the Bruce Highway in through the northern section of Mackay Queensland, during the project rollout. The highway upgrade is the largest road infrastructure program Queensland has seen to this day, with the aim of improving safety, flood resilience and capacity , along the stretch of highway between Brisbane and Cairns. CPB Contractors were awarded the contract for construction of the roadway, which has traffic volumes of around 35,000 vehicles per day with two multi-lane signalised intersections. The Green Frog Systems GFS-400 solar light was selected as it features the latest advances in solar lighting technology able to operate in all weather conditions, meet the Australian Standards requirements for roadway category V road lighting and deploys an advanced wireless lighting communication monitoring system called SAM (Solar Activity Monitoring). The SAM Smart connected lighting platform will give the Queensland Department of Transport command a dashboard to monitor and control the solar lighting assets from a central management console. Each light tower features wireless communication via a LoRaWAN frequency range back to a gateway on the 3G/4G network providing real-time reporting and control of the system, including alerts for faults or outages SAM provides significant efficiency improvements over the traditional phone in system for reporting failures and outages, which requires manual deployment of work response crews to physically diagnose and repair any issues on site. Instead the SAM system reports fault codes or failures with the ability to directly notify the appropriate response team to attend and address the issue. The Green Frog Systems research and development engineering team based in Adelaide, South Australia, developed the SAM platform, which operates from a secure Australian cloud server servicing a range of international clients. The first delivery of concrete block support bases is will arrive at site by the end of April. These bases are fully certified with steel reinforcing and feature lifting lugs for easy maneuverability. This is an important feature of the project allowing for the towers to be re-positioned as the project progresses, whilst remaining constantly connected to the wireless network. When asked why the solar powered solution was selected by CPB contractors for such a major thoroughfare, Douglas Underdown, Business Development Manager for Green Frog Systems stated that, “Green Frog Systems has the experience to deliver class leading solar lighting for roadway applications, it’s a no brainer. The required lighting levels were easily matched with the added advantage of renewable technology not requiring the constant refueling that noisy diesel generator towers do. These are the things that can add to the project cost of longer-term construction efforts such as these”. “Progressive companies such as CPB Contractors understand that when they choose solar powered lighting, they are doing something that’s environmentally responsible and that helps minimises their carbon footprint”.
